The artist Jan Groth (b. 1938) and the museum director/curator Steingrim Laursen (1931 – 2007) built their collection ‘along the way’. It reflects the two collectors, their mutual interests, lives and careers. It is characterised by art that is introverted, intimate and tactile, also works related to research on formal or media-specific issues.
The collection contains works by world-famous artists such as Robert Morris, Tony Smith and Robert Rauschenberg, in addition to the Scandinavian artists Asgeir Jorn, Sonja Ferlov Mancoba, Edvard Munch and others. The collection contains historical art, but a significant number of pieces are by contemporary Norwegian artists. There are also objects from cultures elsewhere in the world, for instance the Dogon and Bamana people in Mali, and artefacts from Iran, Japan, Korea, Egypt and Native American cultures, to mention a few. As of today, this collection contains over 650 works. 250 of these are from diverse world cultures, while the remaining 400 are made by over 100 named artists.
